Sven Botman explains 'long-term' Newcastle United plan as he expresses transfer delight - Chronicle Live

Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of Sven Botman after a deal was agreed earlier this week. The defender, 22, joins the Magpies on a five-year deal after deciding to leave French outfit Lille. Botman has been a top target for Newcastle since before the January window but was also courted by AC Milan earlier this summer. The Serie A side fell flat in their attempts to land the Dutchman, allowing Newcastle to secure the exciting deal. The centre-back will join up with his new team-mates once his summer break is completed - and speaking after his move was officially announced, the youngster admitted his delight at joining the Premier League side. This is the best day of my life, to sign a contract with Newcastle United. It's a day I've worked hard for and I'm very excited. "Newcastle had a long-term plan to get to the top, for both me and for the club, and they play in the Premier League which is the best league in Europe. The whole package is just perfect. I'm looking forward now to meeting the fans and also my new team-mates." Eddie Howe has been keen to bolster his defence this summer and is excited to start working with one of the most sought after centre-backs in Europe. "I'm delighted Sven is joining us. He is technically very good, physically very good and has a great attitude," he said. "At 22, he already has solid experience at the top level but he is at a great age to grow with this team. I am looking forward to getting to work with him and seeing him with his new team-mates." Newcastle have strengthened their defence with the arrivals of Botman, Matt Targett and Nick Pope.
